The basic principle of liquid penetrant testing (PT) is capillary action, which allows the penetrant to enter in the opening of the defect, remain there when the liquid is removed from the material surface, and then re-emerge on the surface on application of a developer, which has a capillary action.

Radiographic testing uses either x-rays or gamma rays to examine the internal structure of manufactured components identifying any flaws or defects by placing the test-part in between the radiation source and film (or detector). In industrial radiography there are several imaging methods available to display the final image they are Film radiography, real time radiography, computer tomography, digital radiography and computed radiography. All of these methods use a source of radiation and detector to summarise the shape and condition of an object or its components.
